'Sweet game'
The prosecutor, prosecuting, detailed Ruben's offending to the legal proceedings.
She explained his those affected were children from difficult backgrounds who were participating in a youth camp which he operated.
Ruben engaged in a "sweet game" with the minors, Mrs Prior explained, in which he would enter the boys' rooms when they were getting ready for bed and ask them to consume candy "as fast as possible".
She told the court the man had conducted this practice with the children "repeatedly", and children had previously fallen ill the following morning.
She explained Ruben had been able to explain this for many years as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his family member had worries in recently.
Mrs Prior KC stated further: "Recently" his stepchild had suspicions about what was going on, with valid cause.
"They chose" to have a look in the individual's items."
The prosecutor stated items including infant oil, ointment and syringes were located, and his stepchild alerted the police about his concerns.
She stated Ruben went on to engage in the "sweet game" with six youngsters that time - that Saturday - and they were all sick the next day.
"Law enforcement" had not arrived by that stage," she stated further.
The police watchdog, the investigative body, previously told that it was examining Leicestershire Police's handling of the incident.
The legal representative explained the youngsters were unable to walk properly due to their condition, so Ruben's stepson called the police a second time.
