Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
